Floating Markets of the Mekong Delta

Lee Lee: Watercolor of the floating market in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

This fall we hosted a couple of young ladies through the Young Southeast Asian Leadership Initiative, which spurred me on to dig out old photographs of our trip through the Mekong Delta in 1999. We were on a live-aboard boat and floated through the water communities that filled the Delta in south Vietnam. The floating markets were delightful as produce from the surrounding countryside was brought aboard long, thin boats, which allowed mobility for the market vendors. The joy and enthusiasm of everyone we crossed paths with was infectious. I hoped to capture the ephemeral nature of these communities by allowing the edges of the compositions dissolve, like the wet environment inhabited by these water folk.

This series of paintings are all 5.5″x11″ – watercolor and colored pencils on paper
